Sacrificial Giving at its Best
Sacrificial Giving! What comes to your mind when you read these words?
For most of us it will be a dollar amount or some other type of material resource. You may think of Barnabas in Acts when he sold a piece of land and laid all of the proceeds at the Apostles’ feet. Without doubt, the Bible teaches and we need sacrificial financial giving in our churches. However, I don’t think that is the sacrificial gift we need or God desires most. Romans 12:1 says “…present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
Churches, church plants and mission teams need warm bodies with surrendered hearts more than all the money in the world. A New Testament Church, an Acts 1:8 Church, is a sacrificially generous church. The sacrifice is measured best not in how much they give, but in whom they give. Antioch gave Paul and Barnabas to missions. The Church at Philippi gave Epaphroditus to minister to Paul. The Church at Corinth gave Priscilla and Aquila. These men and women were among the best they had. First, God gave His Son to save us. Then, we give ourselves to Christ. Next, God gives us to His Church. Finally, the Church gives her best to reach a lost world!
Sacrificial giving, at its best, comes not from our pocketbooks but from our people. Are you part of a sacrificially giving church? Who have you given lately?
